Built By Someone Who’s Been In It
The Owner Journey exists because most coaching only looks at the business — and misses the person actually running it.
Hi, I’m Todd Cummings
I’ve built businesses, led teams, worked through acquisitions, cash pressure, layoffs, founder conflict, and the thousand other things that never make it into the business books. Today, I work with passionate owners who care deeply about their company and their people but need a clearer path forward. The Owner Journey grew out of my own experience — and from the belief that sometimes what an owner needs most isn’t another answer, but another experienced mind in the room.
I’ve spent most of my career building and running businesses.
I’ve started a company from scratch. I’ve helped grow another from less than $1 million to nearly $50 million in revenue. I’ve led hundreds of people, worked through acquisitions and integrations, dealt with cash pressure, layoffs, difficult founder conversations, and plenty of decisions where there wasn’t an obviously right answer. I know what it feels like when the business is growing but somehow everything still seems to land back on you.
That experience is a big part of why I created The Owner Journey. Most business advice focuses on what the business needs to do next. I became more interested in what the owner needs to become next. As a company grows, the role that got you here eventually becomes the thing holding you back. You have to learn when to hold on, when to let go, how to trust people, how to build systems, and eventually how to create a company that can succeed without needing you in the middle of everything.
I also believe deeply that people are not resources. I’ve built teams where people genuinely cared about one another, and I’ve seen how much better businesses perform when people are trusted, developed, challenged, and valued. I’ve also sat through layoffs and restructurings and seen what happens when the human side of a business gets reduced to numbers on a spreadsheet. Caring about people doesn’t mean avoiding hard decisions. It means remembering that the people affected by those decisions matter.
The owners I most enjoy working with are passionate about what they’ve built and the people who helped them build it. They want to get it right. Usually they already have some idea of where they want to go — they’re just overwhelmed, unsure of the path, or need someone experienced to think alongside them. I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to have people who did that for me. Coaching, in many ways, is my opportunity to return the favor.
People Are Not Resources
Underneath every stage of the journey and every pillar of the business is one belief: the people involved — the owner, the team, the clients — aren’t line items to be optimized. They’re the actual point. A business that grows by running people into the ground isn’t a win, no matter what the numbers say.
That’s why the Foundation comes first. Before strategy, before systems, before growth — an owner has to be honest about their own life, their own energy, and the people around them. Vision, velocity, and value only mean something if they’re built on that.
"Value your people — even love them. That’s not soft. That’s the foundation everything else is built on."
How I Coach
Every engagement runs on the same core principles.
A Real Framework, Not Guesswork
The Owner Journey isn’t a generic playbook — it’s five stages, three pillars, and nine areas built specifically to show you where you stand and what to do next.
People Are Not Resources
You, your team, and your clients are never treated as line items. Growth that runs people into the ground isn’t the goal here.
Accountability That Sticks
Regular check-ins and honest follow-through — discovery and diagnosis mean nothing without real coaching behind them.
